For all its other problems, I thought that the Soviet Union&#8217;s promotion of (non-religious) &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christmas-celebrations.org\/108-grandfather-frost.html\">Grandfather Frost<\/a>&#8221; was a pretty good idea. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ded_Moroz\">Here is more about him, with regional variations<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>So has he infiltrated\u00a0 the public library system? And has the Snow Maiden come along as well?<\/p>\n<p>If she has, I am for it. But then I was the little boy who read <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Snow_Queen\">Hans Christian Andersen&#8217;s story &#8220;The Snow Queen&#8221;<\/a> and came away thinking that the Snow Queen was in fact admirable, not the villainess from whom the little boy had to be &#8220;saved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mea<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4799 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.chasclifton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Siberianwinterking.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.chasclifton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Siberianwinterking.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.chasclifton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Siberianwinterking.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.chasclifton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Siberianwinterking.jpg?w=403&amp;ssl=1 403w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>nwhile, our Pueblo Winter King can aspire to equal that Sakut &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4798\">Khan of Winter&#8221;<\/a> (photo at left).<\/p>\n<p>I have not heard how the metro Denver &#8220;solstice war&#8221; is playing out this year \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=7629\">here was the 2015 version<\/a> \u2014 but this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeoastronomy.com\/\">astronomical solstice is at 1628 GMT<\/a>, so 0928 Mountain Time, Thursday the 21st.
