{"id":8123,"date":"2016-07-11T21:10:58","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T03:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=8123"},"modified":"2016-07-11T21:11:25","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T03:11:25","slug":"witches-of-america-sitting-at-the-cool-kids-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=8123","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Witches of America&#8221;: Sitting at the Cool Kids&#8217; Table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374291373\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0374291373&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20&amp;linkId=6f66a72e7b9adfef8e6aae892a4b95e0\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=0374291373&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=soutrocknatub-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0374291373\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>I finally read Alex Mar&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374291373\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0374291373&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20&amp;linkId=e95f8ea86dee4e37ffb707f1d234fbe0\">Witches of America<\/a><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=soutrocknatub-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0374291373\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>, and it is better than I thought, based on some of the reviews that I had seen, <a href=\"https:\/\/godsandradicals.org\/2015\/10\/23\/eat-prey-learn-magic-alex-mars-spiritual-tourism\/\">like this piece of negativity<\/a>, for example: &#8220;[a] sordidly pornographic and self-aggrandising narrative&#8221; or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecountrybookworm.com\/?p=601\">this one<\/a>: &#8220;extremely judgmental,&#8221; or the <a href=\"http:\/\/magickly.com\/witches-of-america-alex-mar\/\">Complete Hurt Feelings Wrap-up here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>First, this is not a grand survey of the Pagan scene by a sympathetic journalist, similar to Margot Adler&#8217;s<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143038192\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143038192&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20&amp;linkId=c9cac3e5ca994448ff8d4112922165b5\">Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=soutrocknatub-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0143038192\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em> (1979, rev. 1986) or the even earlier <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001IQ3BWY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001IQ3BWY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20&amp;linkId=122c049fd14f93f9549f2c6c75ded856\">Witches U.S.A.<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=soutrocknatub-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001IQ3BWY\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> <\/em>by Susan Roberts (1974).<\/p>\n<p>Rather, as one Pagan reviewer sarcastically noted, the better comparison was Elizabeth Gilbert&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143038419\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143038419&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=soutrocknatub-20&amp;linkId=1cd2171fe4bdba83f5f6cbfbdbd3d9aa\">Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman&#8217;s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=soutrocknatub-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0143038419\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>.\u00a0<\/em>(I cannot imagine Julia Roberts playing Margot Adler in the movie version of <em>Drawing Down the Moon<\/em>.) It&#8217;s a memoir about &#8220;finding yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But I still enjoyed the read, once I realized that it was not any kind of a survey but more like Alex Mar trying to find the cool kids&#8217; table in the magic-school cafeteria. Just when you think she has settled on a corner seat at the O.T.O., she started looking across the room at the necromancers. Maybe <em>they <\/em>are the real kool kidz.<\/p>\n<p>At least you, the reader, get to ride along with actual necromancers after midnight. That&#8217;s worth the price of admission right there.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Elizabeth Gilbert&#8217;s marriage to Jose &#8220;Felipe&#8221; Nunes, the &#8220;Love&#8221; part of her title, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/books\/2016\/07\/01\/elizabeth-gilbert-splits-man-she-met-end-eat-pray-love\/86611330\/\">has broken up after twelve years<\/a>.
