{"id":761,"date":"2006-11-04T19:01:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-04T19:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=761"},"modified":"2006-11-04T19:01:00","modified_gmt":"2006-11-04T19:01:00","slug":"a-fall-from-a-height","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=761","title":{"rendered":"A fall from a height"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am in Colorado Springs today, where famous evangelical pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tedhaggard.com\/\">Ted Haggard&#8217;s<\/a> fall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/display.php?secid=14\">dominates the news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, to borrow the name of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getreligion.org\/\">better-known blog<\/a>, I just don&#8217;t &#8220;get&#8221; his kind of religion. A 14,000-member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newlifechurch.org\/\">megachurch<\/a>? Why? So you can sit on your butt and be preached at and sung at among a huge crowd of strangers?<\/p>\n<p>My dislike for Haggard&#8217;s approach is more than theological. It is partly aesthetic&#8211;the whole megamall megachurch entertainment thing. And it&#8217;s partly because  of the way that New Lifers regarded the most interesting parts of Colorado Springs (such as the Old North End and Tejon Street) as controlled by Satan or something. <a href=\"http:\/\/natureblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/ted-haggard-thinks-your-city-is-whore.html\">I wrote elsewhere that they do not understand the gods of the city<\/a>, only the gods of the suburban shopping mall.<\/p>\n<p>One excerpt: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.therevealer.org\/archives\/timely_001945.php\">[Jeff] Sharlet makes a good case<\/a> for New Lifers as exurban parasites, taking the services that the city provides but being unwilling to pay for them, either financially or psychically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, he is toast now, although there will probably be some sort of public-repentence-as-career move. From a Christian perspective, <a href=\"http:\/\/lashawnbarber.com\/archives\/2006\/11\/03\/christians-can-be-perverts-too\/\">LaShawn Barber&#8217;s coverage is about the best<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the news from &#8220;Fort God.&#8221;<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/new+life+church\" rel=\"tag\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am in Colorado Springs today, where famous evangelical pastor Ted Haggard&#8217;s fall dominates the news.
