{"id":736,"date":"2006-10-14T01:17:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-14T01:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=736"},"modified":"2006-10-14T01:17:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-14T01:17:00","slug":"jane-austen-in-woad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=736","title":{"rendered":"Jane Austen in Woad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a long and not terribly encouraging talk with my editor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rowman.com\">Rowman &#038; Littlefield<\/a> last week about a book project involving SF\/fantasy and Paganism. <\/p>\n<p>Then I walked to another building on campus, where students from the English Club were selling used books and baked goods. A copy of Marion Zimmer Bradley&#8217;s <em>The Forest House<\/em> (1993), the prequel to <em>Mists of Avalon<\/em>, more or less jumped out at me, and for fifty cents I bought it.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley said it was partly based on Bellini&#8217;s opera <a href=\"<br \/>http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norma_%28opera%29&#8243;><em>Norma<\/em><\/a>, but really, it&#8217;s Jane Austen in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/albion\/woad.htm\">woad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine: &#8220;It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single Druid in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Have I changed so much since I was rather caught up in <em>Mists<\/em>? Should I blame the alleged ghost-writing by <a href=\"http:\/\/home.pon.net\/rhinoceroslodge\/paxson.htm\">Diana Paxson<\/a>? (Warning: lugubrious music on link.)<\/p>\n<p>The book&#8217;s allegedly Pagan religion is awfully Protestant.
