{"id":666,"date":"2006-05-26T03:21:00","date_gmt":"2006-05-26T03:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=666"},"modified":"2011-08-22T12:22:27","modified_gmt":"2011-08-22T18:22:27","slug":"the-snake-motif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=666","title":{"rendered":"The Snake Motif"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Right before M. and I left on the road trip that culminated in my <a href=\"http:\/\/natureblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/misadventure-in-crotalia.html\">rattlesnake bite and hospital stay<\/a>, I was having trouble with a blockage in the bathroom lavatory.<\/p>\n<p>I did not think that I could get my large plumber&#8217;s &#8220;snake&#8221; down through the waste pipe behind the wall, and I thought of going to the hardware store and picking up a <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.sutherlandlumber.com\/siteimages\/project_images\/101282-3.gif?w=625\" align=\"left\" alt=\"hand-operated plumber's snake\">smaller one. But we were busy packing, and so I left the problem for later.<\/p>\n<p>And then, five days later, came the bite from a &#8220;baby&#8221; rattlesnake and, minutes later, an encounter with a larger one who acted like a proper rattlesnake. In other words, the second one gave us a warning buzz so that we could avoid it.<\/p>\n<p>Home again and still on crutches, I called Cory the plumber. He roared up the driveway in his big diesel van the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I had to explain the crutches. A few minutes later, he had disassembled the drain and was carrying his electric  plumber&#8217;s snake up from the van.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had about enough of this snake motif,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All right,&#8221; he replied, &#8220;we&#8217;ll call it an auger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little snake and big snake, metaphorical.
