{"id":610,"date":"2006-02-06T00:14:00","date_gmt":"2006-02-06T00:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=610"},"modified":"2006-02-06T00:14:00","modified_gmt":"2006-02-06T00:14:00","slug":"610","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=610","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Brothers under the skin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andrew Sullivan, high-profile political blogger, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.blogs.com\/daily_dish\/2006\/02\/benedict_versus.html\">makes a point<\/a> that few people would: the <a href=\"http:\/\/counterterror.typepad.com\/the_counterterrorism_blog\/2006\/02\/more_lies_from_.html\">Muslims rampaging<\/a> over those &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/michellemalkin.com\/archives\/004413.htm\">evil cartoons<\/a>&#8221; and some Christians have a strong family resemblence: &#8220;In the end, the real fundamentalists are on the same side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the side that says religious &#8220;truth&#8221; is more important than your or my freedoms.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for instance, this Canadian Muslim leader&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/calsun.canoe.ca\/News\/Alberta\/2006\/02\/04\/1425825-sun.html\">attack on free speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>And, Imam Syed Soharwardy, president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, says he&#8217;s thankful the kinds of cruel caricatures of his faith&#8217;s Prophet Muhammad &#8212; which have now run in several European papers &#8212; would likely never be printed in this country.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t say which Muslim country he comes from, but whichever one it is, I&#8217;m sure that its newspapers are under the government&#8217;s thumb. And he is happy that Canada is heading in the same direction! Can&#8217;t have any of this dangerous &#8220;freedom of the press&#8221; stuff! (Brad Hicks <a href=\"http:\/\/bradhicks.livejournal.com\/216200.html\">has the right idea<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/skender.be\/supportdenmark\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chasclifton.com\/graphics\/support.denmark.gif?w=625\" align=\"left\"><\/a>What can we Pagans do? Stay vigilant and <a href=\"http:\/\/skender.be\/supportdenmark\/\">Buy Danish<\/a>. And toss some Norwegian sardine in the shopping cart too.<\/p>\n<p>During the first week of my rhetoric class I point out that our Western version of rhetoric arose in the same cultural milieu that gave us an admittedly limited democracy&#8211;classical Athens. Once the concept had been given a name, it had a life. Classical Athens, I muse aloud, was a polytheistic society where there was no Holy Book to settle all disagreements; consequently, they had to be threshed out by the contending parties in court.
