{"id":555,"date":"2005-11-06T22:56:00","date_gmt":"2005-11-06T22:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=555"},"modified":"2005-11-06T22:56:00","modified_gmt":"2005-11-06T22:56:00","slug":"555","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=555","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Scarborough Fair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Listening to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaevalbaebes.com\/\">Mediaeval Baebes&#8217;<\/a> short version of &#8220;Scarborough Fair&#8221; on <em>Mirabilis<\/em>, I got to thinking about the different lyrics of this old song.<\/p>\n<p>The version available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/paris\/villa\/3895\/\">at this site<\/a> make it clear that the singer is asking his lover to perform a series of impossible tasks, for example, to find an acre of land between the ocean&#8217;s foam and the sandy beach or to plow with the horn of a lamb.<\/p>\n<p>The folksong collector <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Carthy\">Martin Carthy<\/a> considered it to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de\/~zierke\/martin.carthy\/songs\/scarboroughfair.html\">version of the &#8220;Elfin Knight&#8221; ballad<\/a>, like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de\/~zierke\/steeleye.span\/songs\/falseknightontheroad.html\">The False Knight on the Road<\/a>,&#8221; in which an elfin\/demonic knight asks a young traveler a series of trick questions.<\/p>\n<p>So is the list of herbs a form of herbal magic or part of the more Victorian &#8220;language of the flowers,&#8221; as the first site suggests?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/mediaeval+baebes\" rel=\"tag\">Mediaeval Baebes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/scarborough+fair\" rel=\"tag\">Scarborough Fair<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/martin+carthy\" rel=\"tag\">Martin Carthy<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scarborough Fair Listening to the Mediaeval Baebes&#8217; short version of &#8220;Scarborough Fair&#8221; on Mirabilis, I got to thinking about the different lyrics of this old song.
