For one, she was not Roman Catholic, not particularly Christian at all. But what a move to bring more of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobos_in_Paradise\">bourgeois bohemians<\/a> into the fold it would be!<\/p>\n<p>Consider the devotion that she inspires.<\/p>\n<p>Walking down Grant Street the other day, I could see little flocks of pilgrims (mostly female, mostly of a certain age) streaming off the streets around the plaza, headed for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/\">her shrine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That shrine, meanwhile, is merely part of an entire O&#8217;Keeffe complex, where the pilgrim may enrich her life with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.okeeffemuseumevents.org\/index.html\">programs and lectures <\/a>on memoir-writing,\u00a0 &#8220;art &amp; leadership for adults,&#8221; plein-air pastel drawing, &#8220;O&#8217;Keefe&#8217;s language of forms,&#8221;\u00a0 and many other sacred subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced initiates might seek a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/stipends-in-american-modernism.html\">stipend in American modernism.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many single women move to the little town of Aibquiu, a Santa Fe acquaintance tells me, where one may for a fee tour just part of <a href=\"http:\/\/gosw.about.com\/od\/newmexicotravelguide\/a\/abiquiu.htm\">O&#8217;Keeffe&#8217;s home there<\/a>: the living room, kitchen, and pantry only, I am told. Have any of them experienced miracles? That would help the sainthood application clear a major hurdle.<\/p>\n<p>Her other home, Ghost Ranch, has functioned as a<a href=\"http:\/\/ghostranch.org\/spiritual-retreats\/\"> spiritual retreat center for many years.\u00a0 (<\/a>It <em>is<\/em> owned <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghost_Ranch\">by Protestants<\/a>, which could be a problem. But no matter.)<\/p>\n<p>Her followers look to her for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/How-Georgia-Became-OKeeffe-ebook\/dp\/B0083RP5H0\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1369782423&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=becoming+georgia+o%27keeffe\"> lessons on the art of living<\/a> and even study he<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Painters-Kitchen-Recipes-Georgia-Okeeffe\/dp\/0890135606\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1369782506&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=georgia+o%27keeffe+cookbook\">r rather plain menus<\/a> for guidance on how an artist eats.<\/p>\n<p>While her cultus already provides an economic lift to the old provincial capital, beatification or canonization would certainly increase that even more.<\/p>\n<p>Just tell the bishops to keep their distance. Otherwise, it&#8217;s a win-win situation.
