{"id":523,"date":"2005-09-23T03:05:00","date_gmt":"2005-09-23T03:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=523"},"modified":"2005-09-23T03:05:00","modified_gmt":"2005-09-23T03:05:00","slug":"523","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=523","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ghost Dancers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/savageminds.org\/\">Savage Minds<\/a>, a joint anthropology blog, some thoughts on <a href=\"http:\/\/savageminds.org\/2005\/09\/14\/ghost-dancing-in-the-new-mellenium\/\">Ghost Dancers of the 21st century<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><em>[S]such movements are never about a pure \u201creturn to the past\u201d but are, rather, an attempt to \u201crescue\u201d the past and re-deploy it to create a more satisfying present and future.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghost Dance and its political-spiritual cousins are distinctly modern phenomena, in both their goals and their methodologies. As Saffo writes, \u201cEmbracing coveted portions of what one opposes in the service of returning an old order is a signature of the Ghost Dance.\u201d Thus we have nuclear technology, the Internet, and the modern transportation system drafted into service in the interest of restoring the social order\u2014even when the desired social order is Muhammad in Medina, the Jerusalem of the Second Temple, pre-contact North America, or even the New Primitivists\u2019 pre-agricultural nomadism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It all sounds very much like what <a href=\"http:\/\/divinity.uchicago.edu\/faculty\/marty.shtml\">Martin Marty<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.edu\/~history\/faculty\/profiles\/applebyrs.shtml\">Scott Appleby<\/a> were saying with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/Complete\/Series\/FP.html\">Fundamentalism Project<\/a>, that fundamentalists use the tools of modernity.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I think that most current religion in America is Ghost Dancing&#8211;and in a secular but equally mythological way, I live surrounded by Ghost Dancers.
