{"id":515,"date":"2005-09-16T17:07:00","date_gmt":"2005-09-16T17:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=515"},"modified":"2005-09-16T17:07:00","modified_gmt":"2005-09-16T17:07:00","slug":"515","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=515","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>More Crazy Season<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Crazy Season: the weeks leading up to Hallowe&#8217;en when the news media rediscover Witchcraft.<\/p>\n<p><em>Witchcraft and Magic: North America<\/em>, edited by Helen Berger and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasclifton.com\/2005\/06\/witchcraft-and-magic-north-america-as.html\">mentioned here earlier<\/a>, has arrived.<\/p>\n<p>One contributor, the sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/newsinfo.iu.edu\/sb\/page\/normal\/94.html\">Tanice Foltz<\/a>, writes on &#8220;The Commodification of Witchcraft&#8221; (a favorite academic topic, also addressed by other scholars, as <a href=\"http:\/\/journalsonline.tandf.co.uk\/app\/home\/contribution.asp?wasp=60316d43146a4d6abc5c0a10bc076eaf&#038;referrer=parent&#038;backto=issue,4,9;journal,6,6;linkingpublicationresults,1:300339,1\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/caliber.ucpress.net\/doi\/abs\/10.1525\/nr.2005.9.1.032?cookieSet=1\">here<\/a>). To her credit, Foltz states, &#8220;I submit that Pagans&#8217; exchange of money for spirituality services such as Wiccan festivals, retreats, and educational programs does not portend a change in the main focus of the religion.&#8221; Elsewhere in her introduction she speaks of the new media image of Witches as &#8220;attractive, youthful, strong, and independent females who openly use their magical powers to fight against evil for the common good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fully in the commodified Crazy Season spirit, then, we have  Australian media-witch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fionahorne.com\/\">Fiona Horne<\/a>, using her powers in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playboy.com\/magazine\/fionahorne.html?souce=cc_promob_0905_fionah\"><em>Playboy<\/em><\/a>, which has a long history of interest in sexy Witches, dating back to at least 1974 when they sent frequent contributor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativequotations.com\/one\/2652.htm\">Mordecai Richler<\/a> to cover one of Llewellyn Publications&#8217; &#8220;Gnosticon&#8221; gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/witchcraft\" rel=\"tag\">Witchcraft<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/paganism\" rel=\"tag\">Paganism<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tag\/Halloween\" rel=\"tag\">Halloween<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More Crazy Season The Crazy Season: the weeks leading up to Hallowe&#8217;en when the news media rediscover Witchcraft.
