{"id":4555,"date":"2012-08-28T04:44:13","date_gmt":"2012-08-28T10:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4555"},"modified":"2012-08-27T20:58:50","modified_gmt":"2012-08-28T02:58:50","slug":"the-bushranger-and-the-witches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4555","title":{"rendered":"The Bushranger and the Witches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A quirky story has been filtering out of Australia in bits and pieces.<\/p>\n<p>First came the discovery of the headless skeleton of<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ned_Kelly\"> Ned Kelly<\/a> (1854\u20131880), the country&#8217;s most infamous bushranger (outlaw) of the 19th century, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeology.org\/1201\/world\/clostridium_gallipoli_acheulean_tools_nasa_prospero.html\">which involved DNA matching and other modern techniques.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then his descendents appealed f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/australiaandthepacific\/newzealand\/9501367\/Mystery-of-Ned-Kellys-missing-head-solved-after-pensioner-comes-forward.html\">or whoever had the skull to bring it back.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then comes a &#8220;self-proclaimed&#8221; (a term used to avoid libel suits) witch from New Zealand <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/video\/world-15749633\/nz-witch-claims-to-have-kelly-s-skull-30393978.html\">who says that she has it<\/a> \u2014 &#8220;given&#8221; to her by a security guard (under what circumstances?).<\/p>\n<p>This woman, Anna Hoffman, was supposedly a friend of Australia&#8217;s most famous pre-Wiccan witch and trance-artist, Rosaleen Norton of Melbourne. An Australian writer on occultism, Nevill Drury,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nevilldrury.com\/nevill-drury-articles-rosaleen-norton-2.htm\"> has devoted quite a lot of time to writing about Norton.<\/a> including a recent article in <em>The Pomegranate: The International Journal of Pagan Studies<\/em>, titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equinoxpub.com\/index.php\/POM\/article\/view\/10451\">The Magical Cosmology of Rosaleen Norton.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which is why I am blogging about Ned Kelly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A quirky story has been filtering out of Australia in bits and pieces.
