{"id":4522,"date":"2012-08-10T09:16:27","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T15:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4522"},"modified":"2012-08-10T09:16:27","modified_gmt":"2012-08-10T15:16:27","slug":"cultic-objects-from-the-cult-of-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4522","title":{"rendered":"Cultic Objects from the Cult of Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I always chuckle at how when archaeologists cannot immediately ascertain the purpose of an ancient object, they describe it as &#8220;cultic,&#8221; in this case as a phallic symbol.<\/p>\n<p>This tendency was parodied in the steampunk-ish graphic novel<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Motel-Mysteries-David-Macaulay\/dp\/0395284252\"> <em>Motel of the Mysteries<\/em><\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Macaulay\">David Macaulay<\/a>, who also created <em>City<\/em>, <em>Cathedral<\/em>,<em> Ship<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-19168047\">In this instance, the &#8220;phallic symbols&#8221; appear to be parts of fire drills<\/a>.
