Yesterday, the author of a journal article, reading her galleys, said that she thought that expressions such as &#8220;sui generis,&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;axis mundi,&#8221;<strong>*\u00a0<\/strong> and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_view\">Weltanschauung<\/a>&#8221; should be italicized as foreign expressions. (I had them in roman.)<\/p>\n<p>I consulted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/home.html\">holy scriptures<\/a>, where in chapter 7, verse 52, I read, &#8220;Foreign words and p<em><\/em>ases familiar to most readers and listed in <em>Webster&#8217;s<\/em> should appear in roman (<em>not<\/em> italics) if used in an English context. . . . German nouns, if in <em>Webster&#8217;s<\/em>, are lowercased.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I assume that the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.websters-online-dictionary.org\/\"> online <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.websters-online-dictionary.org\/\">Webster&#8217;s<\/a> <\/em>is all right. But what about &#8220;most readers&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>I propose &#8220;the <em>New Yorker<\/em> rule.&#8221; Although <em>The New Yorker<\/em> is not an academic journal, its writers and editors seem to expect a level of comfort with common phrases from other major world languages (Chinese excepted, thus far).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if <em>The New Yorker<\/em> puts a phrase like &#8220;sui generis&#8221; in roman, so shall we. A quick search of the phrase on their website will tell us. They do capitalize Weltanschauung when writing in English, however, which is a deviation from the true Chicago path.<\/p>\n<h5>* I have read too much Eliade to ever put axis mundi in italics anyway.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M. and I work together on many editing projects.
