{"id":3569,"date":"2011-12-08T21:39:30","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T04:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=3569"},"modified":"2011-12-13T20:43:38","modified_gmt":"2011-12-14T03:43:38","slug":"tolerance-or-cowardice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=3569","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Tolerance&#8221; or &#8220;Cowardice&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;They learn to accept [both] gay rights in North America and <a href=\"http:\/\/answeringislam.org\/Authors\/Arlandson\/homosexual.htm\" target=\"another\">stoning<\/a> gays in Afghanistan.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Canadian hgh-school teacher wonders if being non-judgmental and &#8220;celebrating diversity&#8221; can go too far <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebestschools.org\/bestschoolsblog\/2011\/12\/03\/wrong-culture-right-teacher%E2%80%99s-surprising-discovery\/\">when he sees his students morally paralyzed by a act of sexual violence from another culture.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a member of a religious minority, I am all for &#8220;tolerance.&#8221; But I am realistic enough to know that we <em>tolerate<\/em> what we do not like but cannot change.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot get rid of all the mosquitoes in the world, so I <em>tolerate<\/em> being bitten, although I try to minimize mosquito bites.<\/p>\n<p>So I figure that if I am to be <em>tolerated<\/em>\u00a0 on one account, I need to make sure that I am contributing to society in other ways. Then people can say, &#8220;Well, he is one of those, but he&#8217;s OK.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But back to the main topic, what are you required to tolerate? Where are the limits?<\/p>\n<p>As Kevin Bearquiver, an official of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/13\/us\/california-indian-tribes-eject-thousands-of-members.html?_r=1&amp;ei=5065&amp;partner=MYWAY&amp;pagewanted=all\">said in a different context,<\/a> &#8221; \u201cTolerance is a European thing brought to the country. We never tolerated things. We turned our back on people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there are more nuanced forms of cultural relativism out there\u2014ask any anthropologist.
