{"id":329,"date":"2004-12-12T00:05:00","date_gmt":"2004-12-12T00:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=329"},"modified":"2004-12-12T00:05:00","modified_gmt":"2004-12-12T00:05:00","slug":"329","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=329","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Secret Thrills of Teaching Rhetoric<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I teach a class each semester on advanced composition and rhetoric, using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ablongman.com\/catalog\/academic\/product\/0,1144,0321172760,00.html\">this book<\/a> as one of the texts. The students are mostly education majors who must take the course as their last exposure to a writing class before they are turned loose on the job market.<\/p>\n<p>This semester&#8217;s final exam included a creampuff essay question that brought this response in the first paper that I graded. &#8220;Students should know who Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msu.edu\/user\/lewisbr4\/980\/rhetrric.html\">Quintilian<\/a> were.&#8221; Quintilian! Take that, constructivists!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, who knows what she will actually do once she has a classroom of her own. I just like the fact that I&#8217;m able to pass on a little bit of the Classical Pagan tradition here at a minor state university.<\/p>\n<p>Over the break, I plan to snuggle up with <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.aidcvt.com\/sbl\/ProdDetails.asp?ID=061610P\">Progymnasmata: Greek Textbooks of Prose Composition and Rhetoric<\/a> to design some new in-class writing exercises. <\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: In all fairness, I should point out that there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-homeschooling.org\">&#8220;Classical&#8221; wing<\/a> in the Christian homeschooling movement. But they run up against opposition from their own co-religionists, as in this excerpt from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-homeschooling.org\/faq.html#bib\">&#8220;Classical Christian Homeschooling: Frequently Asked Questions&#8221;<\/a> page:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Classical education seems like the best model to produce truly educated children. But as Christians, how can we use the model established by the pagan Greeks and Romans?
