{"id":306,"date":"2004-11-14T20:41:00","date_gmt":"2004-11-14T20:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=306"},"modified":"2011-08-17T14:00:18","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T20:00:18","slug":"306","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=306","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Frantic last-minute writing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professors, accustomed to stories of their students working all night to complete a paper that is due the next day, themselves like to joke about finishing a conference paper on their laptop computers in the airplane <em>en route<\/em> to the conference.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, it will probably be a motel somewhere in west Texas, between here and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarweb.org\/\">American Academy of Religion<\/a> annual meeting in San Antonio. (To get in the mood, I watched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0318974\/\">The Alamo<\/a>, in which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000671\/\">Billy Bob Thornton<\/a>  makes a fine, non-stereotypical <em>David<\/em> Crockett.)<\/p>\n<p>I may be making final notes on Michael York&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nyupress.org\/books\/book-details.aspx?bookId=9246\"><em>Pagan Theology<\/em> <\/a>for a panel devoted to the book at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paganstudies.org\">Conference on Contemporary Pagan Studies<\/a> on the 19th. In essence, this involves expanding my cover blurb (&#8220;audacious redrawing of traditional religious boundaries&#8230;&#8221; etc.) into a ten-minute presentation.<\/p>\n<p>As far as Paganism is concerned, I have always been leery of people who wanted to rush into &#8220;doing theology.&#8221; It seemed that what we needed were poets, ritualists, makers, and doers rather than theologians (or &#8220;thealogians,&#8221; for whose who prefer the grammatical feminine).  But York does present &#8220;Pagan theology&#8221; as an entity in itself, rather than merely as the mishmash from which &#8220;true religion&#8221; arose. <\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csulb.edu\/~wgriffin\/\">Wendy Griffin<\/a> said in her own cover blurb, he treats Pagan theology as its own entity rather what looking at what it is not when compared to Judeo-Christian tradition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frantic last-minute writing Professors, accustomed to stories of their students working all night to complete a paper that is due the next day, themselves like to joke about finishing a conference paper on their laptop computers in the airplane en route to the conference.
