{"id":284,"date":"2004-10-13T22:21:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-13T22:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=284"},"modified":"2004-10-13T22:21:00","modified_gmt":"2004-10-13T22:21:00","slug":"284","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=284","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Living by the Code<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasclifton.com\/2004\/04\/counter-attack-on-da-vinci-code.html\">blogged before<\/a> about certain Christians&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasclifton.com\/2004\/01\/drat-that-mary-magdalene-more.html\">horrified response<\/a> to the success of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danbrown.com\/\">Dan Brown&#8217;s<\/a> <em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em>. At least a dozen books are devoted to &#8220;exposing&#8221; it.<\/p>\n<p>But Curtis White&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/vls\/182\/white.shtml\">review essay<\/a> in the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/vls\/\">Voice Literary Supplement<\/a><\/span> makes the best point: <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Da Vinci Code<\/span> is important as an expression of a desire for a spirituality that cannot be had within the confines of the institutionalized church. More simply yet, it is the popular expression of a desire for a kind of meaningfulness to life that is missing for most of us. And certainly, it is the scandalous expression of a willingness to be disobedient to achieve the heretical end of a salvation outside the confines of the church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Excursus religion,&#8221; in other words, a term of Robert Ellwood&#8217;s that I always find useful and apply <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasclifton.com\/papers\/Drugs_Books_Witches.html\">wherever I can<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Living by the Code I have blogged before about certain Christians&#8217; horrified response to the success of Dan Brown&#8217;s The Da Vinci Code.
