{"id":283,"date":"2004-10-12T21:26:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-12T21:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=283"},"modified":"2004-10-12T21:26:00","modified_gmt":"2004-10-12T21:26:00","slug":"283","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=283","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>More than a passing fad?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brooks Alexander of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scp-inc.org\/\">Spiritual Counterfeits Projec<\/a>t (an &#8220;anti-cult&#8221; group) has a new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvesthousepublishers.com\/kit.cfm?EDID=100650&#038;ProductID=6912215\"><em>Witchcraft Goes Mainstream<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It gets favorable notice from <a href=\"http:\/\/id-www.ucsb.edu\/fscf\/library\/RUSSELL\/home.html\">Jeffrey Burton Russell<\/a>, perhaps one of the last of the hardline historians of the medieval and early modern witch trials, who treated at least some of the victims as genuine Satanists.<\/p>\n<p>The publisher&#8217;s language manages to be both conventional and scare-mongering: &#8220;What do I say to my teenage daughter who wants to experiment with witchcraft?&#8221; Why not &#8220;son&#8221;? &#8220;Experimenting&#8221; &#8212; sounds so much less committed than &#8220;adopting a different world view&#8221; or even &#8220;changing religions, much to her parents&#8217; horror.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alexander&#8217;s assertion that &#8220;historical&#8221; witchcraft is in the past would be challenged by plenty of journalists and anthropologists, for people are executed (usually by their neighbors) for the crime of so-called witchcraft all the time, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnewsblog.com\/8177-Tanzanian__witch_killers__charged.html\">particularly in Africa<\/a> but also elsewhere. <\/p>\n<p>Much of the Craft&#8217;s appeal, Alexander asserts, arises because &#8220;The contagious excitement of cultural insurrection is modern Witchcraft\u2019s functional substitute for missionary zeal.&#8221; And then there is feminism, oh yes.
