{"id":228,"date":"2004-07-25T19:23:00","date_gmt":"2004-07-25T19:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=228"},"modified":"2004-07-25T19:23:00","modified_gmt":"2004-07-25T19:23:00","slug":"228","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=228","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Is Starhawk (still) Jewish?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Terry Mattingly of the religion-and-journalism blog <a href=\"http:\/\/getreligion.typepad.com\/\">GetReligion<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/getreligion.typepad.com\/getreligion\/2004\/07\/define_jewish_a.html\">posted recently<\/a> on the difficulties of determining Jewish identity, both for Jews and for journalists. <\/p>\n<p>His post is based on the National Jewish Population Survey of 2000-2001; the link is to a longer article that he wrote. What caught my eye was his line about &#8220;non-monotheistic religion,&#8221; but then he mentions Islam (?!). And here I was expecting some exploration of the prominence of certain Jewish Pagans.<\/p>\n<p><em>The survey defined a Jew as someone whose &#8220;religion is Jewish, OR, whose religion is Jewish and something else, OR, who has no religion and has at least one Jewish parent or a Jewish upbringing, OR, who has a non-monotheistic religion, and has at least one Jewish parent or a Jewish upbringing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I guess people like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starhawk.org\">Mimi &#8220;Starhawk&#8221; Simos<\/a> belong in a &#8220;hard-to-define, niche spirituality&#8221; to newspaper religion writers, to quote Mattingly&#8217;s blogging colleague, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typepad.com\/t\/trackback\/950840\">Douglas LeBlanc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishjournal.com\/home\/preview.php?id=11809\">Jewish commentary<\/a> from Starhawk&#8217;s home town, but it focuses on the dating and marriage issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is Starhawk (still) Jewish?
