{"id":139,"date":"2004-03-10T20:39:00","date_gmt":"2004-03-10T20:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=139"},"modified":"2012-05-22T16:31:26","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T22:31:26","slug":"episodic-religisity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=139","title":{"rendered":"Episodic Religiosity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cultural anthropologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qub.ac.uk\/schools\/InstituteofCognitionCulture\/Staff\/HarveyWhitehouse\/\">Harvey Whitehouse<\/a> divides modes of religiosity into &#8220;episodic&#8221; and &#8220;doctrinal.&#8221; One relies on dramatic ritual experiences, the other on creeds, sermons, texts, exposition, etc.<\/p>\n<p>In his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oup.co.uk\/isbn\/0-19-823414-7\"><em>Arguments and Icons: Divergent Modes of Religiosity<\/em><\/a>, he writes that in small, tribal, or breakaway groups, &#8220;religious life is focused around very infrequent, traumatic ritual episodes.&#8221; &#8220;Traumatic&#8221; seems rather strong, unless, of course, you&#8217;re thinking of adult circumcision, the knocking out of teeth, scarification, tattooing, etc.&#8211;and a lot of Whitehouse&#8217;s field work was done in Melanesia, where some of these practices are or were common.<\/p>\n<p>But now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/content\/news\/0304\/10masonic.html\">here<\/a> is an example of a traumatic initiation ritual.
