{"id":13338,"date":"2023-04-14T14:23:25","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T20:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=13338"},"modified":"2023-04-14T14:24:16","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T20:24:16","slug":"13338","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=13338","title":{"rendered":"An Online Presentation on the Wilderness Vision of Feraferia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/feraferia.org\/images\/stories\/maiden%20savioress%20by%20fred%20adams%20cpy4.jpg?resize=433%2C325&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Maiden Savioress Spirit Guiding the Age of Aquarius,Fred Adams, 1977.\" width=\"433\" height=\"325\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Maiden Savioress Spirit Guiding the Age of Aquarius,&#8221; artwork by Fred Adams, 1977.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Pagan group <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feraferia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feraferia<\/a> had a fairly large (by Pagan standards of the time) following, chiefly\u00a0 in Southern California, starting in the late 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>It was largely the creation of one man, the visonary artist Fred Adams, and was a unique creation, with some inspiration from the ancient Minoan civilization but no real connection to Wicca, ceremonial magic, other Pagan groups, although he did take up John Michell&#8217;s vision of ley lines and sought to delineate them in Southern California.((Many Feraferia members, however, also participated in Wiccan and other magickal groups. That&#8217;s how it often goes.))<\/p>\n<p>Adams described Feraferia (meaing &#8220;wild festival&#8221;) as &#8220;a love culture for wilderness, a liturgy of holy wildness, and a religion celebrating the Magic Maiden.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adams died in 2008, followed by his wife and co-leader, Svetlana, in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Their literary executor was the artist and filmmaker Jo Carson.\u00a0 On Saturday, May 20, <a href=\"https:\/\/cherryhillseminary.org\/newsroom\/coming-to-the-center\/coming-to-the-center-hosts-jo-carson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherry Hill Seminar will present a free online event with Carson, <em>Fer<\/em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gaiadancing.com\/images\/gaia-dancing\/gaia_dancing_dvdcopySm.jpg?resize=268%2C372&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"268\" height=\"372\" \/><em>aferia, A Love Culture for Wilderness<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see the <a href=\"https:\/\/gaiadancing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trailer for her documentary film, <em>Dancing with Gaia<\/em>, at its website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So while the Adamses are gone and the group around them largely dispersed, Jo and others have tried to keep the vision alive, and here is a way to share in it.<\/p>\n<p>They put out a zine, which I got in the 1970s, but to participate back then, you really had to be there, and &#8220;there&#8221; was Pasadena, California.<\/p>\n<p>But you can still get feeling for &#8220;celebrating wildness&#8221; this way.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pagan group Feraferia had a fairly large (by Pagan standards of the time) following, chiefly\u00a0 in Southern California, starting in the late 1960s.
