(Photograph: Trustees of the British Museum)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the fall of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A1mi_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e1mi<\/a>((Also called Laplanders, who live in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and a bit of Russia)) people living in Norway<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/oct\/13\/sami-people-norway-ask-danish-queen-to-return-sacred-witchcraft-trial-drum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> asked the the queen of Denmark and the\u00a0 Danish National Museum if they could have one of their old-time shaman&#8217;s drum back.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The drum belonged to a S\u00e1mi shaman, Anders Poulsson, who was arrested and imprisoned, according to court records. It was confiscated and became part of the Danish royal family\u2019s art collection before being transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.natmus.dk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Denmark\u2019s National Museum<\/a> in 1849. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this drum, we will be able to explain so much about S\u00e1mi history. It tells a story about emancipation and the S\u00e1mi struggle to own our culture,\u2019 added [the president of the S\u00e1mi parliament, Aili] Keskitalo. \u201cThe drum is the key to explaining our heritage.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_12737\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12737\" class=\"wp-image-12737\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.chasclifton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Saami_Family_1900.jpg?resize=323%2C241&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"241\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nomadic S\u00e1mi people, about 1900. (Wikimedia Commons)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The drum, confiscated in 1691 as part of a larger effort to turn the animistic S\u00e1mi into good Lutheran Christians, went to Denmark because at the time Norway was ruled from Denmark, a &#8220;union&#8221; that lasted four hundred years and ended in 1814.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now the wheel \u2014 or the drum \u2014 has turned.<\/strong>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2022\/mar\/13\/three-centuries-on-a-shamans-precious-rune-drum-returns-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Danish royal family, which technically owned it and had loaned it to the museum, has agreed to return it.<\/a><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">It is the first S\u00e1mi drum to be repatriated from abroad and the only one in the collection . .\u00a0 .\u00a0 Now undergoing conservation, the drum will go on display as the centrepiece of a new exhibition on 12 April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">The formal handover of the object is an event of huge significance, according to S\u00e1mi film-maker Silja Somby, who is making <a href=\"https:\/\/oca.no\/news\/arran-360-premieres-at-the-venice-biennale-2022-as-part-of-the-sami-pavilion\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a film about rune drums<\/a> to be shown during the Venice Biennale in August. They are, she said, \u201clike bibles for us. Each has its own special meanings and symbolisms\u201d. . . .<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Rune drums were once a central aspect of their nature-based religious life. When a <em>noaidi<\/em> struck a reindeer-skin and birchwood rune drum with a reindeer-antler hammer, a brass ring would move across its surface. Depending on how the ring moved in relation to the symbols on the drum (painted in a red dye made from alder resin), the <em>noaidi<\/em> would divine future events.
