{"id":11785,"date":"2020-09-10T16:45:51","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T22:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=11785"},"modified":"2021-11-12T19:47:36","modified_gmt":"2021-11-13T02:47:36","slug":"i-want-to-call-diors-cruise-collection-pagan-ish-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=11785","title":{"rendered":"I Want to Call Dior&#8217;s Cruise Collection &#8216;Pagan-ish&#8217; too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T5pBRKED0Bc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, the fashion house of Dior produced a publicity video for their autumn-winter 2020\u20132021 <em>haute couture<\/em> collection that appeared \u2014 to my eyes \u2014 to be all about the the Other Crowd, so I blogged it as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=11594\">Dior Dresses the Fair Folk<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Athough I don&#8217;t follow trends in haute couture, I had fashion on my mind, as<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.equinoxpub.com\/POM\/issue\/current\"> <em>The Pomegranate&#8217;s<\/em> issue on &#8220;Paganism, art, and fashio<\/a>n&#8221; was coming out just then. (Free downloads are still available \u2014 get them while you can!)<\/p>\n<p>About that time I also wrote a post, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=11572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pizzica Video that Tore my Heart,<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 In it, a woman defiantly performs the traditional dance called <em>pizzica<\/em> in a lockdown-deserted piazza in the southern Italian city of<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lecce\"> Lecce<\/a>, in the region of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salento#Province_of_Lecce\">Salento<\/a>, &#8220;the heel of the boot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pizzica has been taken up and (re)-Paganized by some of the local Pagan community, as discussed by Giovanna Parmigiani in a recent\u00a0<em>Pomegranate<\/em> article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.equinoxpub.com\/index.php\/POM\/article\/view\/37787\">Spiritual Pizzica: A Southern Italian Perspective on Contemporary Paganism<\/a>.&#8221;((This is a paid download. But talk to a librarian.))<\/p>\n<p>So what did Dior do to introduce their 2020-2021 &#8220;cruise collection&#8221; but create their own spectacle in Lecce, including pizzica.<\/p>\n<p>I found it a little spooky. Maybe I was infuenced by the earlier solo pizzica video in the deserted (seemingly de-populated) square.<\/p>\n<p>The scene is dominated by musicians and dancers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There was a dazzling set by feminist artist Marinella Senatore, in collaboration with Puglia-based light designers Fratelli Paris, where 30,000 coloured bulbs evoked the luminaire of local folk festivals and contained a number of the artist\u2019s slogans; a rousing score by the Italian composer Paolo Buonvino, who conducted an 18-strong orchestra from Rome, alongside 21 local musicians; a performance by Italian rock musician Giuliano Sangiorgi, folk dancers, and, of course, a vast 90-look collection worn by a slew of the world\u2019s top models. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anothermag.com\/fashion-beauty\/12702\/dior-latest-cruise-2021-show-lecce-puglia-full-collection-maria-grazia-chiuri\">An Ode to Puglia: How Dior\u2019s Cruise Show Celebrates Italian Craftsmanship.&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dior&#8217;s creative director, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maria_Grazia_Chiuri\">Maria Grazia Chiuri,<\/a> has roots in the region. The clothing featured used local products: fabrics from &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lecostantine.eu\/foundation\">Le Costantine Foundation<\/a>, which aims to preserve centuries-old textile arts in Puglia . . .\u00a0 lace embroiderer Marilena Sparasci; weavers Tessitura Calabrese, and more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The folded kerchiefs worn by some of the models were also a nod to local traditional costume.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to focus on the music and dancing, which made the silent models parading through the square seem like inter-dimensional beings. Interlopers. Visitors.
