Articles on the psychological affects of interacting (or not) with the non-human world were popping up in places like <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">McCall&#8217;s <\/span>magazine. Addressing &#8220;nature-deficit syndrome&#8221; would be a component of it&#8211;even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gswpa.org\/ceo-blog\/2008\/08\/outdoor-program-addresses-nature-deficit-syndrome\">Girl Scouts are onto that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as an overarching concept&#8211;even without acknowledging &#8220;spirits of place&#8221;&#8211;ecopsychology does not seem to have caught fire except in a low-level therapeutic way: &#8220;Gardening makes you feel better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Possibly related is the way in which a certain kind of <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203771904574180442354457688.html\">self-righteous environmentalism may be ripe for mocking.<\/a> Are we still too leery of assigning spiritual value to non-human nature? Doing so has been a component of American spirituality since around 1800, as Catherine Albanese wrote in <a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0226011461?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=chascli-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0226011461\">Nature Religion in America: From the Algonkian Indians to the New Age<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=chascli-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0226011461\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important; display: none;\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/>. But it has always been a minority position, although a well-established one.<\/p>\n<p>I used to start my nature-writing students with the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldchanging.com\/archives\/000608.html\">Where You At?<\/a>&#8221; quiz.
