That meant learning to use the &#8220;Jaws of Life&#8221; (firemen just say &#8220;splitter&#8221;) and other <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jaws_of_life\">hydraulic tools for ripping apart vehicles <\/a>in order to remove injured occupants.<\/p>\n<p>In that larger department&#8217;s classroom, the instructor had written on the board:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Welcome to Vehicle Extrication<br \/>Cut It. Split it.
