{"id":1033,"date":"2008-06-12T02:11:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-12T02:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1033"},"modified":"2008-06-12T02:11:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-12T02:11:00","slug":"travel-tourism-pilgrimage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1033","title":{"rendered":"Travel, Tourism, Pilgrimage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blogging will be sporadic, or maybe nonexistent, for the next week as I head for the Mysterious East (Virginia) for M.&#8217;s family reunion. <\/p>\n<p>I do want to make a little bit of a pilgrimage along the way, and if it happens, I&#8217;ll blog it.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, I am obsessed with the thought of flying into a strange airport, renting a strange car, and driving three hours at night through a mostly unfamiliar area to find a place that I have never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike your typical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/content\/08_22\/b4086065667204.htm\">road warrior<\/a>, I have to do that only about once a year.<\/p>\n<p>Really, it&#8217;s nothing compared to what some people have faced:<\/p>\n<p><em>I had decided quite definitely that if I could find the right kind of Kurdish brigand \u2014 and the hills around Kuchan were infested with them \u2014 then by means of a goodly sum of money which I felt confident of getting, and the promise of some plunder into the bargain, I would be able to get through the mountains with explosives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now that is what is meant by &#8220;travel, not tourism.&#8221; It&#8217;s from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/057505087X?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=chascli-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=057505087X\"><em>The Spy Who Disappeared<\/em><\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reginald_Teague-Jones\">Reginald Teague-Jones<\/a>, a memoir of his months in the Caspian Sea region during the Russian Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>My pilgrimage connects with that era too.<\/p>\n<p>But I all I need is someone helpful at the <a href=\"http:\/\/avis.com\/AvisWeb\/home\/AvisHome\">Avis<\/a> counter, not Kurdish brigands.
