{"id":1021,"date":"2008-05-10T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-10T18:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2008-05-10T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2008-05-10T18:55:00","slug":"pointy-hats-and-pacifism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1021","title":{"rendered":"Pointy Hats and Pacifism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite Bay Area witchy bloggers seem curiously quiet about the <a href=\"http:\/\/michellemalkin.com\/2008\/05\/08\/the-witchy-women-of-code-pink\/\">appropriation of witchy imagery by the antiwar protesters at Code Pink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t normally get into politics on this blog, but whatthehell.<\/p>\n<p>From a rhetorical standpoint, I am not sure if anyone&#8217;s set political views have been changed by street theater &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breadandpuppet.org\/\">giant puppets<\/a> and all that stuff.<\/p>\n<p>You can see from the comments that the Code Pink women are not doing the Craft or the larger Pagan movement any good.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think they would have chosen to dress up as Catholic cardinals or Shiite mullahs? How about some big-nosed Jews?<\/p>\n<p>Or how about dressing in buckskins and feather headdresses, while waving rubber tomahawks in an &#8220;antiwar dance.&#8221; Oh no, they would never do that. It might be offensive.<\/p>\n<p>No, they pick the stereotype green-faced Halloween witch instead. They parody our religion for their futile cause. Somehow I don&#8217;t feel the compliment.<\/p>\n<p>One ex-military Pagan wrote to conservative columnist Michelle Malkin to say <a href=\"http:\/\/michellemalkin.com\/2008\/05\/09\/welcome-to-the-code-pink-witches-coven\/\">he was embarrassed by Code Pink too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And that is the thing about today&#8217;s Pagans: for every lefty pacifist there is one (or probably more) military Pagan.<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasclifton.com\/papers\/hood.html\">wrote a paper on this topic once<\/a>, during the flap over Wiccans at Fort Hood.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">UPDATE, 13 May:<\/span> One commenter suggests that the green faces may have been PhotoShopped in on Malkin&#8217;s page. He could be right; and if so, image manipulation hurts her credibility. However, a photo from the <em>Berkeley Daily Planet<\/em>, certainly no right-wing source, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleydailyplanet.com\/issue\/2007-11-02\">does show pointy hats and cloaks<\/a>&#8211;but it is from an earlier Code Pink protest. Newer photos seem harder to come by&#8211;I suspect that the Berkeley news media by now regard Code Pink as just part of the weather and turn instead to stuff like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleydailyplanet.com\/issue\/2008-05-08\/article\/29927?headline=UC-Student-Killed-in-Fraternity-Row-Fight\">fraternity stabbings<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite Bay Area witchy bloggers seem curiously quiet about the appropriation of witchy imagery by the antiwar protesters at Code Pink.
