{"id":1006,"date":"2008-04-11T02:50:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-11T02:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1006"},"modified":"2008-04-11T02:50:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-11T02:50:00","slug":"running-on-fumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=1006","title":{"rendered":"Running on Fumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the course of a discussion which begin with the how-to of inserting video clips into blogs, some of my students and I watched the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nMa14AxhiQ8\">Steamboat Willie<\/a>,&#8221; the original 1928 Mickey Mouse cartoon, in which Mickey was much more rat-like and nasty than today&#8217;s dumbed-down, cuter, and <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/neotony\">neotonous<\/a> version. Not to mention that the chewing-tobacco part is so un-PC.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The &#8220;Now is the winter of our discontent&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ke5-SUDrHMU\">speech scene<\/a> from the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0114279\/\">1930s-fascist version of <em>Richard III<\/em><\/a>, the one starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005212\/\">Ian McKellen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Several of them had already seen it in Professor B.&#8217;s Shakespeare class, but they were ready to see it again. As for me, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vqSoAr3ukEc\">opening scene<\/a> of that film &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teletype\">teletype<\/a> machine &#8212; held me spellbound when I first saw it. (But I was thinking, &#8220;Run, dog, run!&#8221; very soon.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Jeff Dunham doing his &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go\">Achmed the Dead Terrorist<\/a>&#8221; routine, holding the jihadists at bay with laughter.<\/p>\n<p>I was the only who did not already know about Achmed.
